M.EX. is a huge mountainscape in miniature depicting the Mesoamerican experience. Thousands of small scale ceramic buildings will populate the work throughout its development. The work chronicles the history of Mesoamerica, Olmec, Maya, Toltec, Mixtec, Aztec, Spanish Imperialism, the Republic and contemporary Mexico.

M.EX. remembers the five hundredth anniversary of the first face to face meeting between Spanish invader Cortez and the triple alliance emperor Montezuma. They met at the causeway of the Aztec capitol of Tenochtitlan, current-day Mexico City. This event occurred on November 8th, exactly 500 years ago. The result was the attempted erasure if Mesoamerican culture.

Although the Spaniards caused the death of millions of people and the destruction of the written record, the invasion failed. Today there are many millions of people who speak in a wide variety of Mayan dialects and who celebrate their Mesoamerican roots.

“At this moment in time many Mesoamerican children remain in cages at US Borders. This work stands as a protest against the genocidal practices perpetrated against these peaceful people. As both a gringo and a human being, I must speak out against this tragedy. I do so through art.” -Aldo Moroni

The Book

To fund this project and Legacy Makers Place, Moroni, in colaboration with Justine Tucker, created a limited edition art-book entitled The Synoptic Codex of Mesoamerica.

This book chronicles the events of Moroni’s latest epic work M.EX. – Mesoamerican Experience. It is a gift to supporters at the $500 level. You can donate on this website and at Legacy Makers Place events.
